Internet Explorer has been dismissed as an “also ran” for the past several years in terms of web-browsers. It was slow to boot, slow loading pages and possibly the least secure browser on the market. Because of this, Microsoft lost a huge number of users to more modern browsers like Firefox and Chrome.
It appears someone over in Redmond has taken notice (finally) and decided to completely rework IE for its newest rendition: IE9. The newest and most important feature of IE9 is its HTML5 integration. HTML5 allows a much richer and more interactive user experience through a web browser. While other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox 4 (beta) have support for HTML5, only IE9 has full integration with windows 7 and full hardware acceleration. This comes at a cost, however: IE9 drops support for Windows XP to achieve this. It’s a calculated risk that Microsoft hopes will pay off in the future. While other browsers will be writing for an obsolete operating system, Microsoft will only have to write for the latest OS, giving it far more opportunities for fine tuning.
Does it pay off? So far, yes. The beta is fast, its modern and has surprisingly few bugs for non-official release. The look and feel take a backseat to the web-page you are viewing. IE9 makes itself as unobtrusive as possible. Does this indicate a fundamental change in the way Microsoft starts putting out software? A new Minimalist point of view for the software giant? Maybe. After all, this is still just a beta.
